We Have a Dragon!

Sep 14, 2018

I decided to peel off the dragon portion of Trinity's code, and make it into its own little thing.

Dragons are in the Trinity code now, but I am not 100% sure of whether or not they can stay. The finally tidying up of the mod might need a few lines of code here and there, and the current Dragons code has left me only a few bits of space. The dragons are also really fun to ride, and meet a number of goals I had for starting the mod in the first place, which was mainly to reduce some of the late game annoyances, as I saw them, such as non-stop battles and endless travel. I don’t mind these things early on, but later in the game it would be nice to be able to cross the distances undisturbed, as would befit the strength and presence of a true Avatar. So, I have taken the Dragon code and made it into its own, stand-alone mini-mod. Presenting…

Ultima IV: Dragon

EDIT

Here is the link for version 1.1, which includes a slightly more default sized quest:

Ultima IV: Dragon 1.1

I hope someone might enjoy it. Here is an obligatory screenshot:

I’ve installed the mod but am stuck wandering around trying to but I am having problems finding the dragon. Do I need to wait for one to spawn randomly?

Fenyx4

Nevermind! I found a different site saying that you wouldn’t say where the dragon was. So knowing that I wasn’t missing something obvious I began hunting around and found it!

Cambragol

Glad you found it! It is just a tiny little one, one I spun off my bigger mod when I thought I might have to eliminate flyable dragons. It certainly makes getting around easier.

Dragons in Trinity are a little different technically, and have a ‘quest’ to get them.

What a great idea! I downloaded the mod. I was able to find the dragon, but I was not able to find any clues from anyone in-game. I am assuming you modified dialog or added NPCs or something, but I cannot find any differences between vanilla Ultima IV and the mod, other than the presence of the dragon…

I might be missing something obvious. Hoping you can point me in the right direction!

Thanks!

Hi Alex,

Glad you like the dragon. And glad you were able to find it. I really didn’t put a terrible amount of effort into the quest to find it, but I did make one. I suggest…visiting the REDACTED!

I feel a little guilty now. I should make a second version with just a bit more of a quest.

Alex

Wow! That was quick and unexpected. Thank you for the follow up! I tried to figure it out by viewing the TLK files to check for differences, but couldn’t find much…

Looking forward to trying this new version!

Cambragol

Heh heh…I added a bunch of red herring tlk files to prevent just such an attempt! However, the new version has altered tlk files. Existing NPCs who had nothing important to say were co-opted to lead to the Dragon.

Let me know if there are any issues. I got good at making dialogue/quest type changes while finish Threat of the Trinity, so I was able to whip this up in 5 minutes. However, speed breeds errors, so, you know..let me know if it doesn’t work. I did test it before packing it up, so it wasn’t a total slap-dash job.

Alex

You’ve obviously put a lot of the code into the avatar.exe file, as for instance REDACTED. I’m not a coder, so I don’t really know how you did it. Nice job. Found the dragon, just don’t yet know how to mount it…

Cambragol

Lots of NPC dialogue is included in Avatar.exe. So part of the quest is in there.

Mounting the dragon is the same command as mounting a horse. B for ‘board’. Thereafter the commands are the same as for a balloon. K for ‘Klimb’ and D for ‘Descend’. Let me know if that works. Unless I messed things up in 1.1…

I think I am going to ‘redact’ some of our conversation here, as there a few too many spoilers I think. Hope you don’t mind.

Alex

Thanks! I was wary of posting here because of spoilers, but didn’t know how else to communicate. Happy to take this offline if you prefer and use email. But I don’t want to pester you.

The issue I was having with the dragon was that I kept getting thrown. Not sure if there is an item I need, or better dexterity, or…

Cambragol

ah…..ah…you have to be an avatar. You have not the required aura of virtue yet.

Right here is no problem. I will just redact vital info later. It’s not like there are crowds of people rolling through here.
