Just For Fun

I was toying with a wild west total conversion for Ultima IV

Now that the work is done on Ultima IV: Threat of the Trinity, I can cast my eyes towards other projects I have contemplated. One of them was a total conversion for Ultima IV to a Wild West setting.

I never went very far with this, but I did build half of the tile set and some mockups for how the game would look with them. I kindof like the look, and am half tempted to carry on with the idea. Retooling the whole game to match some kind of western aesthetic within the code would take some work, but is certainly possible, if there was some ideas to support it. I.e. the whole virtues, mantras, runes quest aspect would need some kind of Wild West equivalent. Or not. Perhaps all that relative code could be gutted. Still, those aspects all allow for quests, withot there actually being any quest ‘code’. Just names and objects to be found.

Here are some images of the mockups I made, showing what the tileset looks like:

Wild West Conversion Mockup
Pretty much all the 'exterior' tiles in one screen
Wild West Conversion Mockup
Mockups of building and town exterior stuff
Wild West Conversion Mockup
Many, though not all, of the 'interior' type tiles

Anyways, fun stuff.

Well, just Photoshop to make the tiles, but a couple of files are needed to get them into game. Optipng is needed to trim the png files down that Photoshop makes, then XU4 Data File Tools to get the pngs into .ega format.

It’s a bit finicky, and no wonder there haven’t been many additions/mods to XU4 over the years. That and it being a 35 year old game and all.

I remember back in the day using photoshop to edit the tileset for the dragon engine game I referenced earlier. Pixel by pixel is painstaking work…

Glad you like ‘em! Personally, I like the tiles, but not the ‘border’. I think it would be fun to move around in this world at the U4 level. I think though that I am in a minority, as there are not really that many wild west type games/gamers out there, at least compared to the ‘Dungeon and Dragons’ types. Though…with Red Dead Redemption, maybe I’m wrong.
